heavy infantry gun
The sIG 33 was a heavy infantry support gun, the largest weapon any nation classified in that role, issued to infantry regiments' heavy companies to provide direct high-explosive fire against strongpoints. Its bulk and weight made it awkward to tow by horse or truck, which drove Germany to mount it on tracked chassis for better mobility; the first such conversion, on the Panzer I chassis, became the Sturmpanzer I "Bison" self-propelled gun used in the Polish and French campaigns.
