The PaK 38 replaced the undersized 3.7cm PaK 36 as Germany's standard anti-tank gun from 1940, with a distinctive curved gun shield and enough penetration to trouble early-war Allied armor. It proved adequate against the T-34 at close range during the first months of Operation Barbarossa in 1941 but was soon outclassed and superseded in front-line units by the larger 7.5cm PaK 40, though it remained in secondary use through the war.
