The Atlanta class was designed as fast scout cruisers and destroyer leaders but found its real value as dedicated anti-aircraft cruisers, packing up to sixteen 5-inch dual-purpose guns in a small, fast hull. Eight were built, and the class fought hard in the Pacific, collectively earning 54 battle stars. USS Juneau was sunk at the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in November 1942 alongside sister ship USS Atlanta, a loss made famous by the deaths of the five Sullivan brothers who served aboard her together.
