Churchill AVRE

combat engineering vehicle

The Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers replaced the main gun of a Churchill III or IV with a 290mm Petard spigot mortar that lobbed a huge 'flying dustbin' charge to demolish concrete bunkers and sea walls, and could carry fascines or bridging equipment to overcome the beach obstacles that made D-Day's engineering problems as hard as its tactical ones.
