A heavily armoured, slow infantry-support tank, the Churchill landed disastrously at Dieppe in 1942 when most became stuck on the shingle beach, but its thick armour and adaptability later made it the basis for many of Percy Hobart's specialised 'Funnies' used to breach obstacles on D-Day.
