Colossus-class light fleet carrier
light fleet aircraft carrier
Designed to a simplified, merchant-standard specification that could be built quickly, the Colossus class filled the gap between costly armoured fleet carriers and small escort carriers. Only four of the sixteen planned Light Fleet carriers were completed before the war's end, arriving too late for front-line combat, and they were instead used to ferry returning troops and repatriated prisoners of war home from the Pacific and Far East.
