Conte di Cavour-class battleship

Originally launched in 1911 and extensively rebuilt in the 1930s with new engines, guns and armour, these two elderly battleships were nonetheless modern enough to anchor the Regia Marina's battle line. Conte di Cavour herself was torpedoed and sunk at her Taranto mooring by British carrier aircraft on the night of 11 November 1940, a raid studied closely by the Japanese navy before Pearl Harbor.
