The first British cruiser tank fast enough and reliable enough to genuinely compete on its own terms, the Cromwell equipped British armoured reconnaissance regiments in Normandy, using its speed rather than its still-modest 75mm gun to outmanoeuvre heavier German tanks it could not out-fight head-on.
