Built almost entirely of wood by furniture makers and piano manufacturers to save strategic aluminium, the 'Wooden Wonder' was fast enough to outrun most German fighters for much of the war while serving as bomber, night-fighter, photo-reconnaissance aircraft and precision pathfinder, once bombing Berlin in daylight while a Goering speech was being broadcast.
