Adopted in 1931 as a lighter, lower-recoil alternative to the old .455 Webley, the Enfield No. 2 Mk I fired a .38/200 round and was the official standard sidearm of British and Commonwealth forces through the Second World War. Royal Small Arms Factory Enfield could never build enough of them to meet wartime demand, so the older Webley Mk IV was pressed back into production and issued alongside it as a substitute standard.
