The second atomic bomb used in war was a plutonium implosion device, the same design tested at Trinity in July 1945, dropped on Nagasaki by the B-29 Bockscar on 9 August after the primary target Kokura was obscured by cloud. Its 21-kiloton yield was larger than Little Boy's but the surrounding hills confined the blast to the Urakami valley, limiting the destruction compared to Hiroshima's flat terrain. The bombing came hours after the Soviet Union entered the war against Japan.
