Designed by Celestino Rosatelli and first flown in 1933, the CR.32 was the Regia Aeronautica's mainstay fighter through the 1930s and its most successful export, with at least 380 flying for the Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War, where ace Joaquin Garcia Morato scored 36 of his 40 kills in the type. By 1939 it still made up two-thirds of Italy's fighter strength, and worn examples remained in second-line and colonial service in North and East Africa into the early years of WWII, hopelessly outclassed by monoplane opposition.
