high-altitude interceptor
The Ta 152 was a high-altitude derivative of the Fw 190, with extended wings, a pressurized cockpit and MW-50/GM-1 boost systems developed to counter high-flying Allied reconnaissance and escort aircraft. It entered service only in January 1945 and reached front-line units in tiny numbers before the war ended, so it saw little combat, though its H-model variant was among the fastest piston fighters of the war at altitude. Only one example survives today, held by the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.
