Commissioned in August 1940, Bismarck sank the battlecruiser HMS Hood in May 1941 with a shell that detonated her magazines, then was hunted across the North Atlantic by much of the Royal Navy's Home Fleet before being crippled by a torpedo bomber and sunk three days later.
