Fast but under-gunned with only 28cm main guns, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau raided Allied Atlantic shipping and famously dashed through the English Channel in daylight in 1942. Scharnhorst was sunk at the Battle of the North Cape in December 1943 after intercepting an Arctic convoy.
