Plagued by early structural failures and a troublesome Napier Sabre engine, the Typhoon found its calling as a low-level rocket-firing tank-buster over Normandy, where its 3-inch rockets savaged German armoured columns at Falaise. Its thick wing gave it a superb low-altitude turn of speed that made it deadly against V-1 flying bombs as well.
