The IS-3's distinctive rounded, pike-nosed 'turtle' hull and dome turret arrived too late to see combat in Europe, but the tank made a deliberately intimidating debut before Western observers at the September 1945 Berlin victory parade, alarming NATO planners for a decade. Its silhouette shaped postwar tank design on both sides of the Cold War.
