The Jagdtiger was a casemate-hulled heavy tank destroyer built on a lengthened Tiger II chassis, and at nearly 72 tonnes was the heaviest operational armoured fighting vehicle of the war. It mounted a 12.8cm Pak 44 gun in a fixed superstructure with heavy frontal armour, capable of destroying any Allied tank at long range, though its traverse was limited to about 10 degrees each way. Production ran from July 1944 to the end of the war at Nibelungenwerk, yielding roughly 70-85 of the 150 ordered, and only two heavy anti-tank battalions ever fielded it on the Western and Eastern Fronts. In practice mechanical breakdowns and fuel shortages destroyed more Jagdtigers than enemy fire did.
