Originally laid down as a battleship, Kaga was converted to an aircraft carrier under the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty and became one of the six fleet carriers that struck Pearl Harbor. Her aircraft supported the invasions of the Dutch East Indies and Rabaul before she was caught by American dive bombers at Midway on 4 June 1942 and sank after burning for hours.
