Germany fielded sniper-configured Karabiner 98k rifles through the war, arming roughly 132,000 of them with telescopic sights. The low-magnification 1.5x ZF41, of which over 100,000 were produced, was designed to turn an ordinary infantry rifle into what was effectively an early scout-sniper weapon for designated marksmen rather than a dedicated long-range sniper arm, though field-fitting the mount could reduce accuracy compared with factory-matched examples. A smaller number received the more powerful 4x ZF39 scope, which was considered capable of head or chest shots out to 400 m and of hitting a standing man at 600 m, with aimed support fire out to 1,000 m. Both variants saw heavy use on the Eastern Front, where Wehrmacht doctrine emphasized attaching trained snipers down to platoon level.
