A radical canard-configuration, pusher-propeller interceptor rushed into development to counter B-29 raids, the Shinden (Magnificent Lightning) mounted four 30mm cannon in its nose and promised startling climb performance. Two prototypes were built and only one of them ever flew, three times in the fortnight before Japan surrendered, and the design's rear-mounted engine and forward canard have made it a favorite of postwar aviation illustrators imagining what might have been.
