Carro Armato L6/40

light tank / reconnaissance vehicle

Developed by Ansaldo originally as an export design, the L6/40 became Italy's most-produced light armoured vehicle, with 419 built between 1939 and 1944. Already obsolete as a fighting tank by the time it entered service, its low profile and 20mm gun suited it well to reconnaissance, and it served as the principal Italian tank on the Eastern Front alongside duty in the Balkans, North Africa and the defence of Sicily and the Italian mainland, often pressed into roles it was never designed for.
