The standard British and Commonwealth infantry rifle for half a century, the Lee-Enfield's smooth bolt action and ten-round magazine gave a well-trained soldier a rate of aimed fire that could exceed most contemporary rifles, a legacy of its earlier reputation for the 'mad minute' of rapid fire developed before the First World War.
