Italy's newest and most powerful battleships, led by Littorio and Vittorio Veneto, anchored the Regia Marina's battle fleet at Taranto, where Littorio was torpedoed at her moorings by Swordfish biplanes. The class never fought a decisive fleet action and spent much of the war constrained by fuel shortages.
