M1 carbine
semi-automatic carbine
Lighter and handier than the full-power M1 Garand, the carbine armed officers, machine-gunners, paratroopers and other troops for whom a rifle was too cumbersome. Over six million were made, more than any other small arm the US produced during the war, though its pistol-caliber round was criticized as underpowered at range.
