M1903A4 Springfield

Adopted in 1943, the M1903A4 was a purpose-built sniper version of the bolt-action M1903 Springfield, fitted with a Weaver Model 330 or 330C 2.75x telescopic sight (with an optional 2.2x M81/M82 alternative) in place of iron sights. Barrels were selected for accuracy and the receiver's markings were relocated to make room for the Redfield scope mount, but the scopes themselves were criticized for a narrow field of view, low magnification, and poor weatherproofing that frequently fogged or let in moisture. Despite these shortcomings it remained the US Army and Marine Corps' standard sniper rifle in every theater of the war, valued for the parent rifle's inherent accuracy at ranges out to roughly 600 yards.
