M3 Half-track

armored personnel carrier

Combining a wheeled steering axle with tracked rear drive, the half-track let infantry keep pace with tanks across rough ground while carrying machine guns for close support. Tens of thousands were built in dozens of variants, mounting anti-aircraft guns, mortars and anti-tank guns as well as riflemen.
