Rushed to Eighth Army before Gazala, the M3's hull-mounted 75mm gun finally let British tanks fire high-explosive shells and match German armour and anti-tank guns at range, though the sponson mounting and tall silhouette were serious flaws. The British 'Grant' variant fitted a redesigned turret without the American cupola.
