The M36 mated the existing M10 tank destroyer hull to a new turret carrying a 90mm gun M3, built to answer the Panther and Tiger tanks the M10's 3-inch gun could no longer beat at range. Conceived in 1943, the first vehicles did not ship overseas until September 1944 and entered combat that October, arriving just ahead of the Ardennes fighting. Crews valued it as one of the few American vehicles able to kill heavy German armor from a distance, and it remained in US service through the end of the war in Europe.
