Mitsubishi A5M

The A5M was the world's first carrier-based monoplane fighter to enter frontline service, a Jiro Horikoshi design that dominated the skies over China from 1937. Its combat record there directly shaped the specification for its successor, the A6M Zero. Allied pilots who met the fixed-gear survivors in 1941-42 codenamed it Claude.
