Mitsubishi G3M
land-based bomber
A pioneering long-range naval bomber that could strike far out to sea without a carrier, the G3M (Nell) firebombed Chinese cities from 1937 and, alongside the newer G4M, sank the British battleship Prince of Wales and battlecruiser Repulse off Malaya on 10 December 1941. It was the first time capital ships maneuvering at sea had been sunk purely by aircraft, and it announced that the age of the battleship was ending.
