Nakajima Ki-27

Japan's first monoplane fighter, the Ki-27 (Allied codename Nate) gave the Imperial Army air superiority over China and clashed with Soviet I-16s in the brutal air battles over Nomonhan in 1939. Fixed landing gear and an open cockpit made it look obsolescent by 1941, yet it still equipped frontline units when the Pacific War began. Over 3,300 were built before the Ki-43 replaced it.
