Nakajima Ki-49 Donryu

Built to replace the Ki-21 with heavier defensive armament and armor so it could fly daylight raids without fighter escort, the Donryu (Storm Dragon) ended up carrying a bomb load little better than lighter medium bombers because so much weight went into self-protection. Codenamed Helen, it flew across the Pacific and Burma but never fully displaced the aircraft it was meant to succeed.
