Intended as Italy's answer to Allied and German medium tanks, chronic delays meant the P26/40 arrived only after the September 1943 armistice, so almost the entire production run of around one hundred was completed under German control and used by German and Italian Social Republic forces rather than the Regio Esercito it was designed for.
