The P.108 was the only four-engine heavy bomber Italy operated in the war, and one of the few Italian aircraft genuinely competitive with contemporary Allied designs. First flown in November 1939 and entering Regia Aeronautica service in 1941, it flew night raids against Gibraltar from June 1942 and supported operations over North Africa and Sicily, but chronic fuel and reliability problems combined with tiny production numbers kept it from ever becoming a true strategic weapon.
