PT boat

motor torpedo boat

Fast, plywood-hulled and armed with torpedoes and machine guns, PT boats harassed Japanese barge traffic in the Solomons and ran interdiction missions in the Mediterranean and English Channel. The most famous, PT-109, was commanded by a young Navy lieutenant named John F. Kennedy when it was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer in 1943.
