Distinct from the earlier, lighter Semovente da 75/18, the 105/25 (nicknamed 'Bassotto', or Dachshund) mounted a much heavier 105mm howitzer on the newer M43 chassis and was Italy's most powerful self-propelled gun built in numbers. Only 30 were completed before the September 1943 armistice, in time to help defend Rome against the Germans; production then continued under German control, which built a further 91 for its own use against the Allies in Italy.
