Shimakaze

destroyer

Shimakaze was a one-off experimental Japanese destroyer commissioned in May 1943, built around unprecedented speed and torpedo power rather than conventional gun armament. She carried fifteen torpedo tubes for the Type 93 'Long Lance' torpedo, the most of any destroyer ever built, and reached 40.9 knots on trials against a design speed of 39 knots, making her the fastest destroyer in the Imperial Japanese Navy. She served less than two years before being sunk by American carrier aircraft at the Battle of Ormoc Bay on 11 November 1944; her wreck was located in 2017.
