T34 Calliope
rocket artillery
The T34 Calliope bolted a 60-tube launcher for 4.5-inch M8 rockets onto the turret of a standard M4 Sherman, designed by Victor Hawkins in 1943 and originally meant for bunker-busting on D-Day before stability concerns shelved it. With the launcher fitted the 75mm main gun could not fire, though crews later found field workarounds. It saw only limited action, mostly in 1945 with Patton's armored divisions during the push into western Germany, where its modest firepower was outweighed by the terror its launch noise caused among defenders.
