Larger and more heavily gunned than earlier British destroyers, the Tribal-class ships fought in the Arctic convoy battles, the Mediterranean and the Channel, taking such heavy losses (twelve of the sixteen Royal Navy ships sunk) that their name became a byword for the destroyer force's attrition throughout the war.
