The M1935 was the first subtype of the Kriegsmarine's standard M-class minesweeper, ordered in the late 1930s to replace worn-out World War I-era boats and built from 1937 to 1941. It proved expensive and complicated to build, which led to the simplified M1940 and M1943 follow-on types produced later in the war under wartime material shortages. M1935-class boats swept and laid mines in the North Sea, the Channel, the Baltic, and the Mediterranean, and 35 of the 69 built were lost to Allied action or mines. Surviving M-class hulls were allocated to the Allied powers after the war for mine-clearing duty before some were transferred on to Romania, France, Norway, Italy, and Spain.
