Type 3 Chi-Nu

The Type 3 Chi-Nu was designed in 1943 as a stopgap to field a gun capable of dealing with the American M4 Sherman, mounting a 75mm Type 3 tank gun on a lengthened Chi-Ha/Chi-He-derived chassis. Between roughly 144 and 166 were built in 1944-1945, output limited by raw material shortages and Allied bombing of Japanese industry. It was the last tank type fielded by the Imperial Japanese Army, held entirely on the home islands as part of a planned mobile counter-attack force against the anticipated Allied invasion, but Japan surrendered before it was ever committed to combat.
