Developed in 1944 after American M1 bazookas appeared in the Pacific, the Type 4 was Japan's answer to the bazooka and Panzerschreck, intended chiefly for defense of the home islands against an expected Allied invasion. Fired by a prone soldier from a two-piece launcher joined at the midpoint, its rocket used angled base venturis to spin-stabilize itself in flight rather than fins. Only around 3,500 were built before the war ended, and it saw little to no combat use.
