The Type 88 was Japan's standard medium anti-aircraft gun, entering service in 1927-28 and remaining in use through the surrender in 1945; it was the most-produced medium AA weapon in the Japanese inventory. Deployed from Manchuria and China to Pacific island garrisons, its high-velocity shells also proved an effective improvised anti-tank round when fired horizontally against American armor. Late in the war many guns were pulled back to the home islands for air defense, though they were largely ineffective against high-flying B-29 raids.
