Type 89 I-Go

The Type 89 I-Go was Japan's first mass-produced tank and its mainline medium tank through the 1930s, built by Mitsubishi from 1931 after an underpowered 1927 prototype was reworked. It first saw combat in the First Battle of Shanghai in 1932 and was used throughout the Second Sino-Japanese War, then against Soviet forces at Khalkhin Gol in 1939, and early in the Pacific War in the Philippines, Malaya and Burma. The later Type 89B variant ran on an air-cooled Mitsubishi diesel engine, making it the world's first mass-produced diesel-engined tank. By the early 1940s it was outclassed and relegated from front-line use.
