Nicknamed 'Woodpecker' by Allied troops for its distinctively slow, deliberate rate of fire, the Type 92 was Japan's standard heavy machine gun, a Hotchkiss-derived design fed by rigid metal strips rather than a belt. Dug into fortified positions across the Pacific, it inflicted heavy casualties on attacking infantry from Guadalcanal to Okinawa.
