Type IX submarine

ocean-going U-boat

Larger and longer-ranged than the Type VII, the Type IX carried the U-boat war to the Americas and West Africa, including the 'Second Happy Time' shooting spree along the US East Coast in early 1942 when defences were still unprepared for night attacks.
