The first true 'electric boat' submarine, streamlined and battery-heavy to run faster submerged than surfaced, it rendered contemporary sonar and depth-charge tactics obsolete on paper. Over 100 were built but only two ever went on a war patrol, arriving far too late to affect the Battle of the Atlantic.
