USS Arizona (BB-39)
battleship
A Japanese armor-piercing bomb detonated Arizona's forward ammunition magazine during the attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, destroying the ship in seconds and killing 1,177 of her crew, nearly half the servicemen lost that day. She was never raised, and the memorial built across her sunken hull remains the most visited site of American mourning from the war.
