The quarter-ton four-wheel-drive Jeep hauled officers, wounded, ammunition and radios everywhere the US Army went, from Tunisian desert to Pacific jungle trail. General Eisenhower named it, alongside the bulldozer, the two-and-a-half-ton truck and the Dakota, as one of the four pieces of equipment most vital to victory; roughly 640,000 were built by Willys and Ford combined.
